Grandma's Candied Yams Recipe

Grandma's Candied Yams Recipe (Southern Candied Yams) are a delicious fall side dish that combines thick sweet potato slices with a butter and sugar mixture and spices. These yams are baked until tender and have a wonderful sweet flavor with hints of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla. Follow the steps below to recreate Grandma's classic candied yams recipe.

Ingredients
  

  • 4-5 sweet potatoes medium
  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy whip cream
  • 3 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • teaspoon ground cloves
  • teaspoon ginger
  • 1 ½ tablespoons real maple syrup
  • ½ tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Start by washing, peeling then cutting your sweet potatoes in your desired shape. Place sweet potatoes inside your buttered baking dish and set aside.
  • Heat up a small pan. On low high heat melt butter then add sugar, brown sugar, heavy cream, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, maple syrup and vanilla extract. Allow to simmer for 5 minutes until the sugar has melted into the butter.
  • Once sugar and butter has disloved in the mixture, pour it over the sweet potatoes.
  • Bake on 350F 1 hour covered and the last 20 minutes uncovered.
  • Serve warm, enjoy!

Notes

Notes: If the yams are not soft after 1 hour of baking, check their doneness with a fork and cover the dish with foil if necessary. If the yams are still not tender, increase the oven temperature and check on them every 15-20 minutes until they are cooked through. If the syrup is not thick and caramelized, increase the oven temperature and cook the yams uncovered for a few more minutes.
